that is

Just curious.

So I’m reading a series of books by a British author. In the middle of character dialogue, she has “i.e.”. Not all the time! Just in certain instances.

Do you think the character is actually saying, “i” “e”? Or do you think the writer is an idiot who actually means for the character to say “that is”?

I’ve just never seen that in a book before (that I can recall), and it’s driving me nuts.
