When I think of Vince and travel, I think of two songs—
Lord, I was born a ramblin’ manRamblin’ Man – The Allman Brothers
Tryin’ to make a livin’ and doin’ the best I can
And when it’s time for leavin’
I hope you’ll understand,
That I was born a ramblin’ man
I’ve been everywhere, manI’ve Been Everywhere – Johnny Cash
I’ve been everywhere, man
Crossed the deserts bare, man
I’ve breath the mountain air, man
Travel – I’ve had my share, man
I’ve been everywhere
Vince has serious wanderlust – he loves to explore and travel. His evening walks are epic – 2 to 3 hours at a time, sometimes longer and always with stories of what he’s seen.
This wanderlust has taken him across Canada and the US and back again. In the early years there was hitchhiking and later, with vehicle ownership, the freedom to drive wherever he pleased.
Vince’s geolocation memory is strong. The other day on the news the daily photo was from Wells, BC. I said out loud, “I wonder where Wells is?” Vince immediately responded with “Just northwest of Barkerville” – as if I know where that is too!! So, I do a Google map search, curse out loud and Vince laughs. He’s bang on. And, by the way, both are in what is known as Cariboo District in central British Columbia.
This is not the first time I’ve done a Google search for something Vince has said about location. Not only does Vince know “where” many places are, he has a knack for remembering historic and cultural buildings and touristy things about the locations. When we visited family in Moncton a few years ago, as my brother and SIL took us out for a sightseeing drive, Vince asked if certain buildings/locations still existed. I know my brother was surprised at Vince’s memory. It can be frustrating as hell to have such a know-it-all in your life, but other times….🤣
